Happy Birthday, Niagara Frontier Food Terminal!

On this day, March 16, 1931, The Niagara Frontier Food Terminal officially opened for business. That was 88 years ago!

The day was marked with much celebration. David Grey, Vice President of the Erie Railroad, and Buffalo Mayor Charles Roesch spoke to an estimated crowd of 10,000 people. They declared the new Food Terminal had an “immeasurable value to the city of Buffalo,” and “a concrete example of the faith big industry has in the future of our city.”

Representatives of the Erie and Nickel Plate Railroad, who cooperated with the commission merchants of Buffalo in building the market, informed the crowd they were not finished with the original 6 buildings. “We will not stop until we have built one of the leading food terminals in the United States.” Years later, the complex reached its full buildout.
